If you are at the point where you are ready to submit an adoption application, then no doubt you have given serious consideration to the responsibilities of pet ownership, and are completely ready to make the commitment. Still, we want to take this opportunity to remind you that we go to great lengths to give retired racing greyhounds a new lease on life after their careers at the track, and that our adopters are a big part of that mission.
Greyhound ownership is a serious responsibility and commitment. This application is intended to assist Greyhound Pets of America Minnesota (GPA MN) in evaluating the willingness and ability of prospective greyhound adopters to meet that responsibility.
As you know if you have read either of the required books, you should expect a period of adjustment as your greyhound acclimates to its new environment. Each hound is unique, and will adjust to the new environment in unique ways and at unique rates. The adjustment may require patience on your part. GPA MN will assist you in working through these challenges, but you need to be willing to work cooperatively with us to meet the needs of your adopted hound. If you are not willing to put up with temporary problems, you may want to reconsider adopting. Greyhound ownership is a truly rewarding experience, but it is a lifetime commitment and a serious responsibility.
Please also weigh the long-term financial responsibility that comes with pet ownership. Your responsibility does not end with the initial adoption cost - there are ongoing food, supply, and veterinary costs associated with properly caring for any dog.
We truly hope that once you have made a greyhound a part of your life, that you will choose to keep in touch with us by fostering, volunteering, or by participating in our events. We are an active and growing community, and we hope that you will remain a part of it for many years to come.
